The last thing tourists must have been expecting on the busy Bund was a man committing suicide by self-immolation.
From Shanghai Daily:
A man died after setting himself on fire near the Huangpu River along the Bund yesterday morning, police and witnesses said.
The 62-year-old Shanghai native, surnamed He, reportedly poured gas over himself on a square named after Chen Yi, a late marshal of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.
“I didn’t see how it started, but I suddenly spotted a flame that was moving about near Chen Yi’s statue,” said a witness who declined to be identified. “It was a horrible scene.”
I wonder how I would have reacted. Would I have pulled out my camera?
