My job is to look for stories outside the white lines and playing fields. Something unique, something you won’t read on ESPN or the AP or even NBC Sports. One of my favorites so far has been “Pure moment proves Olympics are still relevant.”
Honestly, I was going to the beach volleyball grounds to check out the beach girls and write about it. Bang out 700 words, sprinkle in a few quotes, a couple jokes and call it a day. But some times a moment — a story — smacks you in the face.
When I saw two kids talking outside on the concourse, I knew I had my story. Here’s Tobias Harens and Zheng Mo Xuan chatting before I interrupted and interviewed both of them.
And to prove I wasn’t making it up, here’s Tobias trying to hand Zheng 5 RMB.
