Even my mom has gotten into the Olympic spirit.

My mom — Confucius bless her heart — is really into macrame. There are macrame decorations all over her house, hung on the walls and crowded onto the cabinets and on the mantle. What is macrame, you ask? It’s some form of arts and crafts using knots is all I know. Wikipedia, as always, has a extensive page on the hobby.

So who greeted me the other day when I went to her house? Why, the Fuwa, those adorable mascots for the upcoming Olympics. Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying and Nini — they were all there. My mom had made the mascots from beads from her local Michaels.

This is Huanhuan, who represents the flame of the Games:

My mom is one talented lady. But honestly, I was a little creeped out by those five miniature dolls. It’s the eyes, those black, beady little eyes.

Knowing my mom, the Fuwa will still be displayed in her house years after the Beijing Olympics are over.
